19-year-old 'researched making bombs online', Old Bailey hears

Two teenagers have appeared at the Old Bailey accused of preparing terrorist acts.

Al-Arafat Hassan, 19, and a 15-year-old boy were each charged with a single count of preparation of terrorist acts.

The 15-year-old from Leeds, West Yorkshire, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of researching and buying knives as well as searching online for how to get parts for a bomb.

He was said to have carried out the alleged crimes between January 9 and March 20. 

Mr Hassan from Enfield, north London, allegedly bought knives and chemicals and searched online for to find components for an explosive device between January 12 and February 27.

He was also allegedly caught with a video teaching ‘how to cut people and kill them’.

He was said to have discussed ‘martyring himself’ during online chats.

The north Londoner was arrested by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command following a ‘proactive operation’ on 3 March.

Both teenagers appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court separately this month and were both remanded into custody

The pair will appear at Leeds Crown Court (pictured) on July 29 for a plea and trial preparation hearing, with a trial expected to start on October 4

The pair appeared at the Old Bailey today via video link and spoke only to confirm their names and dates of birth.

Mr Justice Sweeney set a provisional trial at Leeds Crown Court on October 4.
